I’m Ben, the founder of Family Member Care. We began this blog by me telling you all why I created Family Member Care - to help organise and coordinate medical care for my mum.

I’m going to talk about some of the specific things we’ve found useful, and then talk about some changes we’ve made to Family Member Care based on feedback. Both, internally from the team, and from you, our users.

n.b. That’s mum above. I asked her if she was ok with me sharing the picture of her. We call this photo The Notorious RBL. One of my faves. And it’s the photo we use on her profile in Family Member Care. It’s important to try keep things light when you can ?

The Good

In short, Family Member Care has solved the majority of the issues we faced. My sister and I share taking mum to appointments (and to be clear, my mum is still very independent, but there is a lot going on), and all of us now have the right information.

Before using Famly Member Care, keeping track of things was getting hard.

We didn’t have easy access to the current information that my sister and I needed. Or, it had been sent in a text. No, on Signal. No, it was in a docs file etc. This was hard. Family Member Care eradicated that problem. Now, everything is in one place. When we go see the doctor, we have up-to-the-minute information and an easy-to-read list of medications, what they're for, and their dosages.

Mum has her medications prepared by the chemist in a blister pack. She recently got a chest infection and had to go on some new medication. However, she needed to stop one of her existing medications for a time. This can be confusing for everyone, but having it laid out, made things easier. Now, the chest infection is gone, and she’s back on her regular tablets. We update that accordingly.

Keeping track of ‘things’, is not an issue now. And by things I mean diagnoses, medications, appointments, tests, allergies and all her doctors.

There are some other 'things' that the platform doesn’t currently account for, however. And we’re working to implement those now.

‘Things’ we’re adding

Sometimes there are just ‘things’... There are things that happen. That are important. But they don’t really fit into the categories we have (like diagnoses, appointments etc). Family Member Care gives you the ability to make notes, and you can certainly keep a record of those ‘things’. But, it’s quite basic. And for my mum, sister and myself, we realised it’d be good to have some additions here, such as date inputs to your calendar, checklists, and more.

For instance, does it really make sense to add my mum’s recent chest infection to a ‘diagnosis’? Well, it might for you, but in our instance, not really, because it was isolated. But it absolutely is something that we need to record properly. She had really low blood pressure, high temperature, some new medication, and a temporary change to an existing medication. That’s important stuff that we don’t want getting lost in a Notes section. So, we’re creating an Event category that will better manage these types of things. We'll talk about this more when the update is released.

We’ve also realised that… jeepers… there are a lot of external services that are involved. We may cover it in another post, but in short, my mum draws upon some Aged Care services. There are a lot of organisations to meet with - some you do actually work with, some you don’t - but the phone calls and emails… it’s a lot!

We need to be able to include this info in the platform. Sure, you can add doctors and support workers, but it just feels as if there’s also a need to be able to better manage this component. So, we’ll be adding this feature in early 2024.

I’m absolutely certain, that at its core, Family Member Care can help you manage and organise the needs of the person you’re looking after. You don’t have to remember where everything is, or if something’s been documented - it’s just all there. I probably found this the most beneficial. It’s just knowing that if and when you need it, all the information is at hand.

And, hey! Remember that you’re probably doing this because you love the person you’re looking after. And it can be hard. We can always have a bit of fun though too.
